This website aims to help you navigate and understand the complex history of Godzilla and it’s long-standing franchise. Each post is created to discuss/analyze a certain aspect of a film or character within the Godzilla sphere.

Godzilla is a decades long internationally recognized franchise loved internationally. The franchise began in Japan with Godzilla (1954) written and directed by Ishiro Honda. The film came at a turning point in Japanese history with the beginnings of an American motivated democracy along with the end of an era of strict media censorship. Japanese nuclear anxieties are reflected through this film onto the character of Godzilla.

The original Godzilla is a uniquely Japanese film created by a Japanese production company, Toho, which operated without any outside international interference. It was not until 2016 that there was another movie like it. When Godzilla was written in 1954 it was written as a commentary of Japanese society during that era. Further installments such as 2016 Shin Godzilla and 2023 Godzilla Minus One follow is very similar footsteps as they analyze Japanese society through Godzilla.
